Final Project Preproduction #11

With the feedback I get from the rest of the group members I finally did the final prototype of the drone by combining several parts of different designs, like the lenses, the hands, the body, the wings and the shield plates. After that I used Photoshop to add a bit of glowing effect on the parts that will be illuminated like the turbines or the lenses.

Final Project Preproduction #10

I started doing several alien starship designs trying to drawing them with very organic shapes or directly with organic materials. I took several references like Tyranid star fleet from Warhammer 40k but also other artists creations that look organic and strange.
On the other hand I also did a few designs of the space station or part of the space station. In this sense I think my designs weren’t too good but I shared them with the group in case they help them in some way.
In general, My idea for the design of the different factions, Humans and Alien, was that humans would be very geometrical or edgy looking and the aliens would be more curvy and organic shapes.

Final Project Preproduction #8

In order to have a more deep understanding of the shape and movement of the alien leader’s head I did some studies of them with and without mask and from different point of views. This would help me in the modelling process as well as in the rigging and animation process.  I will need some references of the face behind the mask due to the transparency of the material.  I used a skull as reference and used the goat pupil’s shape to make it look frightening and weird.

In the case of the drone, the first idea of the group was to make an humanoid robot with legs or wheels but I tried another approach by making some designs of a floating robot or drone.
As this robot should be able of grab and interact with the environment it was essential that it have some kind of mechanical hands. I also thought several flying and floating systems like wings, reactors, fans… in order to sustain the drone.
As the drone will have to have “eyes” I added several lenses and radar antennas in order to get a visual map of its surroundings.

Final Project Preproduction #6

I have drawn the final concept of the alien leader. I wanted to give contrast compared to the minion’s strength and bulkiness making it looks a bit fragile. I wanted make it slender and thin, almost vulnerable but with a threatening aura. This kind of weak look is normally associated in character design to intelligence character or that have magical or psychic powers like in this case, I also made it straighten to improve the intellect perception. In order to make it look more fragile, I made it very skinny with the rib cage being very noticeable. Following the minion’s design I add to it bonny protrusions, horns and shells. To make them even more similar I used a bigger version of the inner arms of the minions as superior limbs and similar leg shapes like horses with a dinosaur aesthetic. I wanted to make it look more like a human so I added hair as something similar to a ponytail, I took as inspiration the helmets of the Eldar’s banshees from Warhammer 40K.  For the feet, I look for dinosaur and dragon references. I also decided that its face would be concealed by an organic technologic gelatinous mask in order to look like the minion face but also to have eyes under the mask.

Final Project Preproduction #5

I have painted the alien minion in order to decide which aspect will have and which palette I will use in the final model.

I have isolated the painting surface with alpha masks to delimit the painting surface. I used also a multiply layer filter on the drawings to keep the lines and be able to paint under them. After that I created a base layer with 100% opacity to support the upper layers transparency, I painted the base colour of each part. After that I started the lighting process by adding the gradient colours with a smooth brush with high opacity, one layer for the shadows and another for the light. In order to keep make more contras in the silhouette and some interior lines I repainted some of the lines with black and then to increase the lighting effect I added a second line of white next to the black line in the side the light was coming. Once I finished I started using filters and modify the colours to get the desired effect of the base colour model. Then I started to change the hue, saturation and illumination to test and get different colour results helped by layer mask filters in order to get some colours that are not obtainable with this process, like white or black.

Final Project Preproduction #4

We have divided up our work between us. In my case I have halved the characters design with Ryan. He will do the Humans characters and I will do the Aliens characters. For the aliens we agreed that they should look like a mix between Tiranids from Warhammer 40k and the enemies of Warframe having a mix of soft, smooth skin covered by hard plates of bone. At the same time their technology should be based on organic matter. Because of that they will have glands sack around its body and shells that act like armor pieces.

I have look for some references in order to sketche the alien minion that would be a brute creature that will be more than one, won’t be unique as the alien leader.

In order to make it and look lethal I cantered my interest in the brute force instead of an agile and fast creature, I took gorillas and rhinoceros as an animal start point. Therefore, it should be bulky, muscular and hunched, walk on all 4 or more limbs. As I wanted to create some features that the entire alien race characters share I made it with a soft slimy skin but with shells and bonny protrusion like pointy horns, or spinal vertebra extensions on the back. I took Alien and Predator aliens as inspiration in order to create the face of the minion making it without facial features like eyes, nose or ears making it stranger and alien. I also add some glandular sacks on the neck for the corrosive saliva spit these creatures will be able to shoot. I gave some contrast on its overall bulkiness adding two slender arms in the chest like a T-Rex. They would use these hands in order to grab things and help them to eat. Their movements will be like a gorilla normally walking on all four and attacking with its superior limbs, claws and maw.Alien01_Colour00.pngAlien01_Colour00_02.png

Final Project Preproduction #3

I have created a concept of the scientist outfit basing my concepts on this references:

I wanted something simple and futuristic with some gadgets and little harder pads over the shoulders, the knees and the elbows.

I have also started my concepts about the aliens by drawing whatever comes from my own imagination. I have used Photoshop to create black silhouettes to develop several possible designs quickly.

Final Project Preproduction #2

We have had the meeting in the Starbucks cafeteria. We have talked about the background history of the game and alien and characters design. Basically, there are a scientific space station that is dedicated to the study of a near black hole. Before the beginning of the game an alien spaceship has come out from the black hole. The ship doesn’t respond to the space station call so the security group decided to board the spaceship discovering there is nobody on board. Finally they decided to dock the ship in the scientist space station to let the scientist to research about the effects the black hole had on the ship and also the alien technology. Nevertheless, something strange happen and the crew of the space station started to feel sick and get crazy attacking other people. A scientist discovered that near the reactor of the space station this effect disappears. The survivors of the riots decided to move all the cryogenic pods to the reactor room and get everybody to a cryogenic sleep leaving only one survivor asleep to control the drones that will investigate what happened in the ship. These drones will be controlled by the sleeping survivors and will be the main character that will control the player. Each time the robot dies one person inside a cryogenic pod will die due to the electric backlash of losing the connection with the drone. Inside the ship there will be temporal displacement events that will show two scenes in different periods of time that will help the drone to solve certain puzzles. At the same time the robot will have to face a group of alien that were hidden in the space time dimension. The objective of the main character therefore will be to find a way to make the survivors scape or to defeat the alien leader by solving several puzzles and reactivating the systems of the spaceship.
